In this series we travel to NEW YORK, with sights and smells that are irresistible!
Our first episode features three unmissable stops in any New York itinerary.
– Russ & Daughters –
The Shop: 179 E Houston St, NY (Open everyday)
The Cafe: 127 Orchard St, NY (Open everyday)
Walk past the shop on the way to the cafe; you can see the full display of their bagels, cream cheeses, smoked salmon and many Jewish style deli goods! Pick something up for later on, you won’t regret it 🙂 You can then walk a couple of minutes over to the cafe where you’ll find a beautiful little place to enjoy all that it has to offer.
Don’t miss out on trying some kind of bagel, cream cheese and smoked salmon. They sound like simple items but they will blow you away! If you have the space, we heard the “Noodle Kugel” which is an egg noodle dessert!? is delicious, and a Babka is a classic Jewish sweet dish too.
The “Yum Kippered” board ($16USD): get it with an everything bagel – it has poppyseeds, garlic, sesame seeds… everything! And is delicious. Comes with cream cheese, tomatoes, capers for a DIY style meal. If you prefer a more raw smoked salmon, go for the “Classic” board.
Eggs Benny ($18USD): a twist on a classic breakfast dish, it comes on this delicious fluffy brioche style bread, runny eggs and the salmon is a Scottish style smoked one. Sliced so thin it’s almost translucent, but packed full of flavour!!!
Chocolate Egg Cream: like a fizzy iced chocolate! Weird but worth trying!
– Katz’s Delicatessen –
205 E Houston St, NY
We came on a weekday morning and there was hardly anyone there which was amazing! We walked by again on a weekend brunch and the line was ridiculous so if you can, come on a weekday to avoid the crowds!!!
When you come in, go talk to some of the servers; they’ll let you try different meats and give you suggestions on what to get. If you’ve seen “When Harry Met Sally” the place will seem familiar, but you’ll have definitely never been somewhere like this before! They specialise in their corned beefs and pastramis – they are NOTHING like what you get in a supermarket all canned up or packaged. All the meat is HOT and stuffed HIGH in a delicious sandwich.
We knew they were huge. You can DEFINITELY SHARE.
We split a:
Katz’s Pastrami Hot Sandwich. (about $20USD) We asked for only a little bit of mustard, but it also came with oozy cheese on top. Not sure if that’s standard but it’s delicious. They won’t judge you for sharing!
– Top Of The Rock –
30 Rockefeller Plaza, NY
You have two options coming to NY for some sights. Some people go to the Empire State Building which apparently has killer views too, but you can’t SEE the Empire State Building from the Empire State Building, so we suggest going to the Top Of The Rock!!!
Once you get to the top (tickets cost about $34USD each), you have a couple of levels and different 360 degree decks to see all across NY. Outdoors and indoors so don’t be too worried about the cold! (Or heat!) We went just before sunset; it’s golden hour but it gets PACKED so try and get in early!
Everything in this episode got rated 5 stars, but that’s because they are serious MUST DO’S even if you only have a short time in NY.
Enjoy the episode and we hope you loved it as much as we did!
